New Halaal Code of Conduct expected before end of 2005

The South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA), the National Independent Halaal Trust (NIHT), the Islamic Council of South Africa (ICSA) and the Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust (MJC HT) have been working with the Consumer Goods Council on a Code of Conduct and Halaal Certification. The new certification will provide closer cooperation between parties and enhance communication and value to the consumer.

Reaching consensus has taken longer than expected, but it has now been confirmed that three of the parties - MJC HT, NIHT and ICSA - have indicated that they are prepared to sign the Final Code of Conduct and make a formal announcement before the end of 2005. It is hoped that SANHA will endorse the Code early next year.

The parties will then begin discussions on the Uniform Standards of Halaal Certification.

In February 2005, the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) facilitated a collaborative effort between the four major Halaal certifying bodies in South Africa to revise Halaal Certification, Code of Conduct and Standards.

The Council believes the adoption of a Final Code of Conduct and agreement on Uniform Standards of Halaal Certification will ensure that lasting good order prevails in terms of the commercial aspects of Halaal Certification, and it will continue facilitating discussions between the parties. A key feature of the negotiations is the indicated and agreed desire by all to be part of a National Halaal Forum.

The CGCSA is a section 21 (not for profit) company and has no regulatory powers. The certifying bodies involved in discussions with the CGCSA accordingly have done so entirely of their own volition in the interests of the Muslim consumer.
