Cape Philharmonic season features Pompa-Baldi and Midori gala concert
These concerts are in addition to the forthcoming three-concert series, which features the pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi, who is returning to Cape Town to complete his interpretation of the Rachmaninov piano concert cycle with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. On the programme on 8 May will be the Piano Concerto No. 4 and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The CPO will also play works by Mussorgsky and Kalinnikov under the direction of Theodor Kuchar.
The series begins on 17 April, with Peter Daniel as conductor and also as soloist in the Mozart Violin Concerto no 5 in A, K219, "Turkish". The marimba and vibraphone Duo FourIVTwo will play the Concerto for Marimba, Vibraphone and Strings by Peter Klatzow. The orchestra will also play the Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor.
At the second concert, on 24 April, Ben Schoeman will play the Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto, also with Daniel on the podium. The CPO will play Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture and Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor. These symphony concerts all take place at the City Hall at 8pm.
Midori, a Japanese-American violinist, will perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto at Artscape Opera on 14 May, under the direction of Arjan Tien. The CPO will also play the overture to Smetana's The Bartered Bride, and Dvorak Symphony No. 9 (From the New World).
Midori will also play Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Brandon Phillips, at Artscape Theatre on 18 May at Artscape Theatre.
