Encouraged by the success of their 99c bread initiative, FNB and Boxer are expanding their strategic partnership to provide South Africans with greater everyday savings, enhanced rewards and improved access to practical financial solutions.

The strengthened collaboration comes as households across the country continue to grapple with rising living costs, placing increased pressure on monthly budgets.

By combining FNB's financial services expertise with Boxer's extensive retail footprint, the two organisations aim to deliver meaningful value where customers need it most – at the checkout.

Building on the success of the 99c bread initiative

Just one month after launching the 99c bread offering, the partnership has already demonstrated strong customer uptake.

More than 220,000 bread vouchers have been issued, representing over R2.2m in value made available to customers. So far, shoppers have redeemed R73,650 in savings, with redemption figures expected to increase as vouchers remain valid for 31 days.

The initiative builds on FNB's affordable bread programme introduced with Pick n Pay in 2024. Since its launch, more than 7.7 million bread vouchers have been issued, with a total value exceeding R77m. Over the past 18 months, redemption rates have tripled, highlighting the growing demand for practical savings on everyday essentials.

Helping customers stretch every rand

FNB CEO Lytania Johnson says the partnership reflects the bank's commitment to supporting customers through practical solutions that improve their financial wellbeing.

"At FNB, our purpose is to be a trusted partner to our customers by helping them achieve financial health and thrive. The reality is that many South Africans are making difficult decisions every month about how far their income must stretch."

Johnson says meaningful support begins with understanding customers' everyday realities.

"This partnership is rooted in listening to our customers, understanding the pressures they face and responding in ways that make a real difference in their everyday lives. We believe help is most meaningful when it is relevant, practical and delivered at the point where customers need it most."

Expanding access through retail partnerships

The enhanced collaboration forms part of FNB's broader strategy of combining banking, rewards and strategic partnerships to create greater value beyond traditional financial services.

Boxer's extensive network of stores, particularly in rural and semi-rural communities, enables the partnership to reach customers in areas where affordability and accessibility are especially important.

Looking ahead, both organisations plan to introduce additional rewards opportunities, enhanced customer benefits and new value-driven initiatives designed to help households manage everyday expenses.

A shared commitment to financial inclusion

Boxer CEO Marek Masojada says the partnership is built around understanding customers' daily needs.

"Our customers are looking for more than low prices alone. They want brands that understand their needs and provide genuine value."

He says combining Boxer's community presence with FNB's financial expertise creates practical solutions that make meaningful savings more accessible.

"By bringing together Boxer's community reach with FNB's financial expertise, we are creating solutions that support customers in practical ways while making meaningful savings more accessible to households across the country."

Beyond affordability, both companies see the partnership as advancing financial inclusion by ensuring financial services are integrated into customers' everyday lives rather than existing as standalone products.

Creating value beyond banking

According to Christelle Pretorius, chief operating officer for FNB's Retail and Business segment, the partnership reflects a shift towards designing solutions around customers' real-life priorities.

"Customers don't think in terms of banking products. They think about how to put food on the table, get to work, support their families and manage their lives."

She believes partnerships between financial institutions and retailers can create more relevant ecosystems that deliver tangible benefits.

"By combining our respective strengths, we can create a more relevant ecosystem that delivers greater value and better outcomes for customers."

Johnson says the partnership marks the beginning of a broader journey.

"As customer expectations evolve, we will continue to look for new ways to bring together trusted partnerships, innovation and practical support that help South Africans navigate their financial lives with confidence."

As economic pressures continue to shape consumer behaviour, the expanded FNB-Boxer partnership signals a growing focus on integrating banking, retail and rewards to help South Africans stretch every rand further while improving long-term financial resilience.
