Sport summit to promote debate

The second edition of the Sport Industry Summit, to be held in Johannesburg on 24 October 2013, will aim to promote debate among leading figures as they engage in key industry issues.

The summit will address governance, ethics, sponsorship, marketing and operations as well as other defining issues from across the sector.

"After the success of last year's inaugural summit, we are hoping this year's event will provide an opportunity for further debate and discussion on important topics in the industry," said James Monteith, managing director of Sport Industry Group SA.

"The summit offers a rare chance for role players in various sectors of the industry to share their concerns and ideas with other stakeholders."

Renowned sports journalist David Walsh will give the keynote speech, focusing on governance in sport.

Walsh, chief sports writer for British newspaper The Sunday Times, played a key role in exposing doping in international cycling, which led to the downfall of disgraced American rider Lance Armstrong.

The summit will also host various discussion groups.

Breakout sessions

A three-member panel, including International Olympic Committee executive member Sam Ramsamy, Multichoice South Africa group CEO Imtiaz Patel and Jenny Pheiffer, head of group brand and sponsorships at Standard Bank, will address the African business perspective.

Another three-member panel - Amadou Gallo Fall, the managing director of NBA Africa, David Sidenberg, a director at BMi Info, and Richard Dunn, the managing director of Playmakers - will convene later in the day to discuss the future of the industry.

Attendees will have two opportunities to choose between breakout sessions during the day.

The first three panels will discuss the rules, media and operations of the industry, while the practical sessions will focus on new platforms, new markets and new communications.

The summit will close with the much anticipated 'Big Interview', which offers views on the future of the industry from well-known sports personalities.
