The Intrepid Traveller's Guide to Thailand
The capital, Bangkok, is the world's most visited city. And, with the country being voted 13th friendliest in the world, the lush forests, white beaches, turquoise water and great cultural experiences, it's not very difficult to see why millions of travellers visit Thailand each year.
Why not try a Fish Spa? If you have rough heels and can stand the tickling then let these little fish nibble away at the dead skin on your feet while you relax. After your spa session, grab yourself a cooling drink served in a small plastic bag with a straw and ice, or even treat yourself to a beer with ice. It might all sound strange, but it is all part of the Thailand charm.
For a local experience, try an Amulet Market. Here Buddhists are in search of good luck charms. Sundays are the best days to visit, with more vendors and customers, and makes for a fascinating outing.
Also spend some time at the Rama IX Park. With a stunning botanical garden, several lakes and gardens it is the biggest green space in Bangkok. Although there are many things to do and see, you will not find many tourists here, but expect to see locals lounging around on their free afternoons.
If you wish to visit the more touristy spots, here are five popular ones:
1. The Grand Palace: The gold-tipped palace is Thailand's most sacred site and should not be missed.
2. The Floating Markets: Experience the charm of these colourful markets while shopping for fresh local produce, and of course taking lots of photos.
3. The Elephants: Rather than riding on the elephants, try visiting an elephant sanctuary to learn more about Thailand's national animal.
4. The National Parks: This might come as a surprise to some, but Thailand has world renowned parks such as the Khao Sok National Park.
5. The 1 430 islands: That's right, there are 1430 of them. Each one has its own unique offering, such as partying on Ko Pha Ngan or snorkelling at Ao Sane.
With such a vast array of sights, activities and magnificent beaches, it can become both overwhelming and exciting to plan and book your next Thailand adventure. All you need is to find some inspiration on various Thailand holidays.
