Year of the Rabbit gets wine range
Hazendal wine estate has introduced its De Haas wines, in white, rosé and red in a screw cap range, a first for the estate. Haas, meaning rabbit or hare, takes its name from Christoffel Hazenwinkel, the original owner of the estate in 1699. 'Hazen' is the plural for 'haas', which reportedly roamed Hazendal in those early days.
The White is a blend of Chenin Blanc (55%) and Sauvignon Blanc (45%), pairing with oysters, sushi, line-fish, light creamy pastas, chicken dishes or a fresh garden salad.
The Rosé, made from Merlot, goes well with caviar, sushi, smoked salmon, crayfish and Cape Malay or Thai dishes.
The red blend, 51% Shiraz, 27% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a perfect accompaniment to most meat dishes, meaty fish such as salmon or tuna and is delicious with pizza or pasta.
All are available nationally at leading retailers and priced at R35 per bottle.
