Quality rise ups mohair sale prices

The second sale of the year's summer season took place in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, 10 March 2010, with 161 130kg on offer, and featured an average market indicator increase of 10.7%.

Mohair SA general manager Deon Saayman said the mohair on offer was of better quality than the first sale and was reflected in the resultant price rises. The adult market was once again marked by fierce competition between “greasy” exporters and “topmakers”, resulting in an 8% increase in fine adults and a 7% rise in strong adults prices.

“Interestingly, these prices were achieved despite a stronger (rand),” he said. The continuing mohair fashion trend in Europe would likely increase demand for kid mohair later in the season as it was still trading at considerably lower levels than a year ago.

“The strong performance of the mohair market is reflected in the 33% higher level of the average market indicator.

Compared to the previous sale, prices were as follows: Kids (summer) up 17%; young goats (summer) up 7%; fine adults up 8%; strong adults up 7%; average up 10.7%.
