Award winner to chair screenwriting discipline at AFDA
Thandie Brewer has been appointed as discipline chair for screenwriting at the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance (AFDA), it was announced last week by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). She is an award-winning writer, director, script editor and facilitator, and is a co-mentor in the NFVF Sediba Spark programme where she teaches the fundamentals of story for the screen.
Brewer was recognised by AFDA as part of the school's practice to honour leaders and innovators in the industry. In her new role, she will be expected to share her expertise with the students and also contribute immensely to the school's research department.
Her accolades include winning the best South African play for 'Samuels' Fugue' in the Soundscapes Competition in 1995 and writing international film scripts such as 'Paris Le Cap', 'Cheap Lives', 'The Weather Man', 12 Dancing Princesses' and 'The Story of an African Farm'. Her latest TV Series, 'Usindiso/Redemption!' was a finalist for best drama at the international Emmy Awards in 2008. Her latest comedy series 'The Chemo Club' drew much attention at this year's Cannes International Film Festival. She is also the chairperson of The Writer's Guild of South Africa.
