SA chiller appears in thriller

Appletiser is a household name in South Africa and abroad. Created in 1965 by Edmond Lombardi, a farmer in the Western Cape region of SA, it is now available in over 35 countries the world over - but achieving global status is not the only feat this South African brand's only boast.

The brand gets a mention in American author, Robert Ludlum's most recent novel, released posthumously. Ambler Warning, a spy thriller, was published, with the help of a ghostwriter, after Ludlum's death in 2001 and the excerpt from the book is as follows:

The main flow of traffic on the mezzazine was to the left, toward another gathering spot: an area with wicker chairs and a bar on which were arrayed various small bottles and cans, mainly sodas and fruit juices and beverages. As he got closer, he saw that the beverages came from around the world: Fruksoda, a lemon-lime drink from Sweden; Appletiser, a fizzy apple juice from South Africa; Mazaa, a mango flavored soda from India; even Titan, a gooseberry-flavored soda from Mexico.

The brand's marketing manager, Andrea Shuttleworth, feels the mention in the book shows how far the brand has come since its humble beginnings 43 years ago. “We believe the secret to our success in the fiercely competitive global beverage market is the focus on staying current; and having the ability to reinvent the brand to keep up with the trends and demands of our dynamic markets,” she says.
