SA media worker rearrested in Zim

A South African satellite technician, Abdulla Gaibee, spent a week in a Zimbabwe jail, charged with violating that country's communications laws, according to the Freedom for Expression Institute (FXI). On Friday, 4 April 2008, a Harare court acquitted Gaibee, but he was immediately rearrested and detained.

It is unclear what he will be charged with or when, says the FXI.

Lenasia-based Gaibee works for Globecast, which has been providing satellite services to some broadcasters covering the Zimbabwean election. According to Globecast and his family, Gaibee had fulfilled all the necessary requirements and received the necessary accreditation for his work in Zimbabwe. Nevertheless, he was arrested on Friday, 28 March.

Meanwhile, the Mail & Guardian Online reports that Gaibee's colleague Sipho Maseko, who had also been arrested, acquitted and rearrested at the same time, was admitted to hospital in Harare after his blood sugar levels reached dangerous levels as his diabetic medication began running low.
