Hit and miss Many, if not most, South Africans are basking in the reflected glory of the performance of District 9 [see our stories, galleries and review] which has gone down unbelievably well in the US - and is still trending on Twitter. Will it do the same in South Africa once it opens this Friday, 28 August 2009, nationwide? The premiere last week in Johannesburg was certainly something SA had never seen before, with Ster-Kinekor at The Zone @ Rosebank completely packed to the rafters as the who's who in the country's creative industries and Ster-Kinekor Movie Club cardholders turned out to hobnob and party with the cast and crew. Not everyone appears to be happy, however, with one commentator to Bizcommunity.com describing District 9 as ‘racist'. The fact is that it's a satirical look at the absurdities of apartheid, and that is how it should be viewed. It's certainly not the first time that a film dealing with some aspect of SA has drawn criticism... nor will it be the last. Here's to the sequel to District 9! Simone Puterman & Rod BakerPS In this week's Ornico Ad Showcase, we feature TV ads for Hi-Q, SARS, CK One, DStv Compact and Toyota Prius, and radio ads for Mango, Oxy, Shell, FAW and Mercedes Benz S-class. [Samson Mulugeta] District 9 satirises the absurdities of apartheid in a science fiction account of extraterrestrials who become refugees in South Africa. Part of its success in the US can be attributed to a quirky and viral marketing campaign, which used billboards at bus stations to encourage people to call a toll-free number if they spotted “non-human activity”.
