World Cup volunteer applications close end of month

Volunteer applications for the 2010 FIFA World Cup close on 31 August 2009, after which the 15 000 volunteers needed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be selected.

Despite the exceptional response of 47 251 applications, there are still openings for volunteers with specific skills including those with driver's licenses wishing to work as transport volunteers.

For the chief executive officer of the OC, Dr Danny Jordaan, the enormous response from South Africa and around the world is an indication of the excitement around the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“We are honoured by the tremendous response we have received. We can see how excited people from all around the world are about 2010 in the number of applications we are receiving from volunteer hopefuls. They are eager to be part of this World Cup that will showcase Africa's capabilities to the world,” said Jordaan.

In terms of applications, Johannesburg is leading the pack with 11 969 volunteers across the two venues of Ellis Park and Soccer City while Tshwane/Pretoria has an impressive 6176 applications. Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth (4752) and Cape Town (4356) are not far behind with Durban currently sitting at 3971.
