CoRE teaching program boosts literacy and numeracy in underprivileged areas
The Indaba Institute's Community-Rooted Education (CoRE) program in Stellenbosch has reported significant progress in addressing South Africa's literacy and numeracy challenges.
In a survey conducted in Kayamandi township, children taught by CoRE-trained teachers achieved scores of 94% in emergent literacy and 57% in numeracy, significantly outperforming national averages.
The program trains local educators using innovative teaching methods and community-based resources to enhance early childhood education in underprivileged areas.
These outcomes, verified through the Early Learning Outcome Measures (ELOM) assessment tool, highlight the effectiveness of grassroots teacher training in improving educational outcomes.
The findings underscore the potential for addressing systemic issues in early childhood education through targeted, community-driven approaches.
