To follow up or not to follow up

I have recently entered the field of Public Relations and read that you should not follow up on press releases as this puts pressure on journalists. Is this true? 24 May 2007

De Lille calls to regulate blogging and MXit – censorship or protection?

Patricia de Lille has put out a press release calling for the government to 'regulate' Internet blogging and MXit. The feasability of such 'regulation' aside - this smacks of censorship to me. It's interesting that the leader of an opposition party, and famed whistle blower, would advocate censorship - but what is more interesting is that this debate polarises two distinct values - people's right to free speech versus how we as a country/ nation/ globe protect children. Big questions... Will the elimination of new communications technologies really ensure better protected children? 22 May 2007

Is PRISA run by aliens?

I have a theory about PRISA. First of all, when you call their switchboard, NOBODY ever answers...spooky. Second of all, the principals that run this business are people I have never heard of in the PR industry. I only see them at PRISA events but they do not seem to exist outside the realm of these "PRISA" events. Again, it makes me wonder, do they get beamed up and down by some mysterious spaceship? 15 May 2007

Bullard on blogs – storm in a teacup?

Yesterday, the Sunday Times published a column by David Bullard which has gotten South African bloggers all riled up (see search results on aggregators Afrigator and Amatomu. Ray Hartley, editor of the soon-to-launch The Times, makes the following observation on his blog: “The question I have is why do bloggers feel so threatened by an old media column? And why does an old media columnist feel so threatened by blogging?” 7 May 2007

Sowetan Freedom Day ad: parody or reality check?

Do you think the controversial Sowetan advert parodying Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream’ speech should have been banned by the SABC? Should it have been run at all by the Sowetan when Freedom Day is supposed to be a celebration or was the newspaper giving South Africans a reality check? 3 May 2007

Car Manufactures unite to develop campaign against car hijacking

Just a thought, since the spend for south african car brands is relatively high why do they not all colaborate & contribute a % of their marketing funds towards an anti-car hijacking campaign to get rid of those thugs who kill/rape/torture for the cars they are pushing to the SA market? Quite frankly every time I see a Toyota Run X ad or VW ad I remind myself NOT to buy any of those brands as they are high on the hit list. 27 Apr 2007
