The airport industry takes off

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) have announced a capital expenditure budget of R5.2 billion for the next five years to accommodate the influx of visitors from the 2010 soccer world cup, ensuring that the Airport Industry Showcase, South Africa's first airports industry exhibition, will become a major highlight on the industry calendar in coming years.

South Africa's industry is expected to boom as companies accelerate and bring forward their capital expenditure programmes in preparation for 2010. Not only will all local airports need to be equipped and upgraded to cope with the increased traffic demands, but they will also have to take into account maintaining world-class standards through future and long term infrastructure requirements which go well beyond the soccer world cup.

ACSA has officially endorsed the Airports Industry Showcase, which takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 19-21 October, viewing its role as integral in the development of an efficient airport infrastructure in South Africa and the growth of aviation on the African continent as a whole.

Air travel in Africa is anticipated to increase exponentially (Boeing estimates a growth of 5.3%) over the next 20 years.

The Airport Industry Showcase will support and facilitate this growth of aviation and the airport industry in Africa and promote the objectives of NEPAD across the continent.

Bringing together all the African and international suppliers of airport-related products, services and technologies, the Showcase aims to enable African airport management role-players to effectively and profitably satisfy the requirements of the growing aviation sector on the continent within their own countries.

To date, over 50 local and international companies have signed up to exhibit at the event, covering all sectors of the industry including airport terminal buildings; apron, hangars, runways and air traffic control; air cargo; technology; passenger services; and retail.
