Sparrow FET College launches MERSETA accredited qualification
Sparrow FET College based in Sophiatown, South of Johannesburg recently launched a new MERSETA accredited qualification.
The private College that has made a name for itself in offering skills training alongside industry joined forces with fluid power solution specialists-Pirtek to train suitable learners in Fluid Power Hose Assemblies.
Pirtek is funding 16 students who are currently enrolled in the first intake and providing workplace experience which is a pivotal part for the completion of their program. The program "Fluid Power Hose Assemblies", with standards from NQF level 2 to 3, is a full time bursary program extended over a period of six months.
Students will spend the first half of their training covering the intensive theoretical component and practical training in the simulated workshop on campus. The last three months, students will be placed in Pirtek workshops to gain the all-important workplace experience before being certified as competent. The qualification will equip students with the skills required to make up hydraulic hose assemblies, identify and select the correct fittings, read and interpret basic fluid power engineering drawings and maintain safe working procedures.
The introduction of this skills program gathered various industry experts, media and other companies associated with the College. The first group of students, who were also part of the big day, was all geared up in their Pirtek branded protective jackets, t-shirts and beanies. It was evident from the energy the students displayed that they were excited to be part of this program and most importantly to meet the partners who were making this happen for them.
The day closed off with National Franchise and Administration Manager, Ray Wentzel, and one of the students, Mary Kgoanyane cutting the ribbon as a gesture of the official opening of their workshop where all the training will be happening. The brief launch highlighted the benefits of industry partnering with training providers.
The Fluid Power Hose Assemblies skills program is answering the skills need within the hydraulic hose industry. "The partnership is beneficial for both the industry and Pirtek. We need qualified, skilled people." said Kieron Goss, MD of Pirtek.
