Children with higher IQ don't eat meat

Research by the British Medical Journal suggests that a child's IQ predicts his or her likelihood of becoming a vegetarian as a young adult.

The study said the smarter the child, the more likely she or he will eventually shun meat, and stated that children with a higher IQ tend to have a healthier lifestyle as adults.

Breakthrough of the week

Cannabis is the most favoured drug of choice and is said to often be a gateway drug for children to try other narcotics.

Researchers from the US National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre are studying whether the pharmaceutical drug Sativex - registered for pain relief in multiple sclerosis patients - can also help people better manage cannabis withdrawal symptoms.

Nutrition bite

Give your child a healthy diet rich in fish, vegetables, fruit, legumes and wholegrains, especially if he or she has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. According to a study in the journal Pediatrics, eating healthily may improve the behaviour of children with ADHD if therapy and medication fail.

Around five million children in the US alone are diagnosed with ADHD and symptoms include hyperactive behaviour, inability to pay attention and impulsivity.

But the study is still in its early stages so it should be considered an alternative or secondary approach to treating ADHD, not a first-line attack, said the review by doctors at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago.
