Central Gauteng Golf Union appoints new CEO
Said CGGU president, Bill Swailes: "Over the past year, CGGU has taken stock of the impact of the economic changes and the effect of the downturn on the golfing industry - in particular, clubs. The outcome was that the single biggest challenge facing golf clubs is the traditional approach being taken to run them - it has become outdated and a new leadership paradigm needs to be adopted. This paradigm is to move from a current amateur-led scenario to one of being professionally driven."
"To ensure the future viability of the clubs and the game of golf, CGGU will align its strategies to the latest economic trends,' said Swailes.
The union plans to build its affiliated golfer base to 30,000 golfers over the next five years and become the leading, professionally-driven golf Union in the country.
"It is vital that we take the lead in professionalising the management of amateur golf, so that we can better serve all golfers through our member clubs," said CGGU president, Bill Swailes. "Sports bodies that are amateur-led are often cash-strapped and ineffective, and this needs to change."
Wealth of experience
He said he was excited that member clubs came in solidly behind the new strategic plan at the recent annual general meeting, and delighted that the executive committee had unanimously selected Elliot to take the Union into the future.
"Paul brings to us a wealth of experience as a successful businessman in a large corporate environment with a very strong track record," said Swailes.
He thanked Marinus Weiss for his sterling contribution as CGGU executive director in recent years, and looked forward to his continued contribution as a key member of the new team.
"As a first step, the CGGU will establish a new model for operating, so that we can create our own destiny through generating the returns required for sustainable growth and impact," said Swailes. "This inclusive vision and strategy will allow us to grow the game through providing specialised services to our member clubs - such as marketing, communication and business development."
"The CGGU is committed to the sustainable growth of amateur golf in South Africa," commented new CEO, Paul Elliot. "We will lead by example, championing our core values of merit, corporate governance, collaboration, integrity, etiquette and good sportsmanship."
"Whilst many industries are still in catch up mode, it is CGGU's intention that its strategy and tactical plans are designed to get ahead of the wave and to 'hit the ground running'," concluded Elliot.
