Recognising growth potential in franchising

Before becoming a Maxi's owner, Tommy Roux was a senior manager in the exports division of a well-known Japanese car manufacturer that looked after the African market. He decided to pursue a career as a Maxi's franchisee in the middle of 2009, choosing the brand because he believed that it offered stability and the potential for financial growth.

Believing that a person should not run a restaurant business too far from home, as it is a time consuming industry, he selected a store not too far from his home in Pretoria.

"The experience gained from my first store enabled me to take on the franchising challenge with confidence. After owning one store, I wanted more, as I immediately recognised the growth potential of the business."

He was given an opportunity to take over two existing Maxi's stores and now owns three outlets - Wonderpark shopping centre, Menlyn shopping centre and Mall@Reds, all in Pretoria. His recipe for success is that restaurants must always be owner operated and incorporate honest business dealings with suppliers, customers and property owners. He also believes that treating employees with respect is vital, as happy workers are more productive and ultimately contribute to the company's bottom line.

"I have learned that it is very important to surround yourself with good people and that you must not chase money, but rather try to make a difference in somebody's life every day. Try to take a break at least once a year and read a lot of good business and spiritual books in order to stay focused and motivated."

CEO of Taste Holdings, Christo Calitz expresses his confidence in Roux's management style. "He exemplifies the type of entrepreneur that will succeed in franchising. He understands the importance of time management and that he needs to be organised to sustain the long hours and sacrifices required to succeed in the restaurant industry. As importantly, he also recognises that to be successful in business he needs to support the group's franchising systems and processes and also capitalise on the head office support provided to ensure maximum results."

Roux is considering expanding his franchise portfolio further in the future.
