The future of journalism: top editors speak out
The World Editors Forum is running a series of exclusive interviews about the future of journalism on its Editors Weblog, with top editors at leading newspapers around the world. The latest instalment is with Jonathan Landman, deputy managing editor of the New York Times.
The Landman interview can be found at http://www.editorsweblog.org. Landman says the Times defines itself as a "news and information company, not just a newspaper or print company." But print remains central to the mix, now and in the future.
"Big US papers like The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal still have a lot of loyal readers who like the feel and experience of a newspaper," he said. "I imagine newspapers will survive until the perfect electronic substitute comes along and combines the portability and readability of a newspaper with the connectivity and multimedia capabilities of the Web. When will that happen? Place your bets."
