FusionDesign trains industry's up-and-coming young talent

FusionDesign, a Cape Town based corporate design house that is fast becoming one of South Africa's most dynamic design forces, has shown its commitment to furthering the industry in South Africa through the development and training of previously disadvantaged individuals.

The company, which consists entirely of female management, has been taking in marketing and design students since its inception in 1999 and this year eight young women from previously disadvantaged backgrounds were offered internship.

Nadia Lerm, a partner at FusionDesign, heads up the training programme. "During the course of the year we take in several students from school to university levels and provide them with hands on training that helps equip them to deal with the very real world of meeting deadlines and keeping clients happy by producing top quality work."

Lerm feels that it is essential to provide this first hand experience to aspiring, budding designers and strategic thinkers in order for them to achieve their full potential.

"A students internship can last anywhere from three days a month for three months to three months full-time, depending on what they want to achieve and on what projects they work on. The training programme follows a formal process and at the end of the year the interns are gathered together for a feedback session to evaluate how effective their training has been."

"FusionDesign plan to continue with the training programme as we want to tap into the source of fresh young talent - and provide the opportunity to pick up skills that will enable them to get jobs based on aptitude and experience," says Lerm. "This in turn provides a pool of talent that ensures our clients get the benefit of dedicated and enthusiastic team members."
