SABC: No end to the woes? The recent history of the SABC has not been a particularly happy one, what with financial problems, management issues, programming problems - and it seems they might not be ending anytime soon. According to a Sunday World report, two of its top executives, Itani Tseisi and Lerato Nage, have tendered their resignations. Not to be beaten, banned by the TV channels, Nando's has taken its diversity ad to print - which the fast-food chain did in yesterday's Sunday Times. Meanwhile, chairman of Sekunjalo Group Iqbal Survé is believed to be interested in buying a stake in South Africa's Independent Newspapers. It seems almost certain that the sale of the local newspaper group will go ahead, if not to Sekunjalo then to another buyer - Shanduka chairman Cyril Ramaphosa, for example, has been named as also being interested. And on the social media scene, Tameron Carneson makes the point that social media marketing is not an exact science and ponders the question: Has GM made the right decision regarding advertising on Facebook? What goes pop? Mike Silver shows you how to ensure the perfect pop when using pop-up stores as an engagement medium in the SA market. He also gives you some pointers as to what to do - and what not to do. Rod Baker, Content DirectorResponses to this column welcomed in our editor's column archive. Fast food franchise, Nando's, has had a print version of their banned television advertisement published in the Sunday Times [video]. "Unlike our broadcasters, we're giving you the right to choose," a banner at the bottom of the advertisement reads. [Gail Schimmel] In recent weeks, many right-thinking South Africans have begun to wonder if we as a country may have our priorities wrong. Thousands march about the president's penis, but child rape and lack of jobs and education seem to cause little more than a ripple on our radars. And now the SABC has decided that it should pull ads off its own bat, and has disallowed a Nando's ad, it seems, on the basis that it promotes xenophobia and violence and has bad language. [Justin Glanville] With the advent of the digital age, things have changed immeasurably. At first everyone had to have a website, and that was simple enough. But now there is a bewildering array of technologies, platforms and solutions available such as blogs, mobile, apps and, of course, social media in its various forms. People use desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets to connect and interact with the wider world in ways that we couldn't imagine only a few years ago, and with ever-greater ease. Read more >>

[Marcus Stephens] The rapid growth of digital media over the past 10 years has completely reshaped the media planning landscape, challenging the way that media planners used to think as they rolled out the advertising strategies for their clients. [Johann M. Smith] Oh Fender, Fender, Fender - the sound that echoes like a tin can in a dead-end street, banging and twanging for more than 50 years now. [Johann M. Smith] It's not hard to have fun with Peachy Keen. The name alone hints at their deeply imbedded perkiness. And with an EP entitled "Backseat Bingo", you can assume a theatrical carousal of good times, with all the intimate sexual underlying bells and whistles it suggests.
