The campaign marks the latest expression of Virgin Active’s Social Wellness Club positioning, reflecting the brand’s evolution from a traditional fitness club to a broader destination for movement, recovery, wellbeing and connection.
Virgin Active is challenging the idea that a fitness club should be a place you visit simply to work out.
The global health and wellness brand is building a new kind of club: the Social Wellness Club – a space designed around the reality that what people need for their wellbeing changes from day to day. It means training, but it also means recovery. It means nutrition, expert support and community. It can mean a hard workout, a swim, a stretch, a moment to focus, time with friends, somewhere to work, or simply somewhere to reset. In short: the club is no longer just about exercise. It is about helping people feel better – physically, mentally and socially.
Dean Kowarski, CEO of Virgin Active, said: “Social Wellness Club is really quite simple. It's a place that meets you where you are. Some days you want to train hard. Other days you need to recover, connect, focus, or just take some time for yourself. We want our clubs to support the whole person, not just the workout.”
The proposition represents Virgin Active's response to a fundamental shift in how people think about health. Wellness is no longer confined to a gym session or a single activity. It encompasses how people move, recover, eat, connect, think and live. Virgin Active is now taking that proposition across its global network.
The new global campaign, Everything You Need Is Inside, gives the Social Wellness Club proposition a single expression across Virgin Active's international markets. The line carries a double meaning. Everything a member needs is inside the club – from training and recovery to nutrition, community and expert support. But everything they need to show up is already inside them too: the motivation, strength, focus and reasons they walked through the doors.
The campaign is built around the idea that there is no single version of a Virgin Active day. Some days are about pushing yourself. Others are about slowing down. Some are social. Some are solitary. The club is designed to accommodate all of them. The campaign will roll out across South Africa, the UK, Italy, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Qatar, Namibia and Botswana, appearing across out-of-home, TV, cinema, print, digital, social, CRM, app, website and in-club channels.
While the proposition and campaign are global, its creative execution has a distinctly South African origin. Virgin Active invited creative agencies from around the world to pitch for the next chapter of its global brand platform.
The brief was awarded to Cape Town-based independent agency We Are Bizarre, with the campaign subsequently developed and produced by South African creative talent.
The work was produced by Patriot Films, directed by Sam Coleman, with an original score by Cape Town composer Markus Wormstorm.
Mia Steenekamp, group creative director at Virgin Active, adds: “One of the most exciting aspects of this project was creating a global campaign that could resonate across very different markets, cultures and audiences. We wanted to capture the full Virgin Active experience, from training and recovery to community and connection in a way that felt relevant wherever you are in the world.
We shot over three days and three nights in Cape Town, using the same location, crew and cast for the hero film and all the assets that followed. It’s a South African production designed to speak to a truly global audience, and that’s something we’re very proud of.”
The result is a global Virgin Active campaign conceived, crafted and produced in South Africa – and now being rolled out across the world.
