#WomensMonth made possible by

#WomensMonth | The most important women in sport may never wear a jersey

Ask any sports fan about their favourite sporting moment and they'll probably remember exactly where they were.

They'll remember the winning try, the last-minute goal, the impossible catch, the athlete and the roar of the crowd.

Ask them who negotiated the sponsorship that made that moment possible, who built the fan experience, who protected the partnership, who managed the rights, or who somehow kept everything on track behind the scenes...

You'll probably get a blank stare.

And that's perfectly okay. The people behind the scenes have never been chasing the applause. They've simply been making sure everyone else gets to enjoy it.

Having spent the past decade in the sponsorship industry, one thing has become increasingly clear to me. While athletes remain the heartbeat of sport, the business behind sport has quietly become one of the most creative, collaborative and commercially complex industries there is.

Today's sponsorship isn't about putting a logo on a jersey. It's about building partnerships that matter, solving business challenges, creating experiences fans genuinely remember and turning rights into relevance. That work starts long before kickoff and carries on long after the final whistle.

As we continue through Women's Month, I've found myself thinking less about the women standing on podiums and more about the women quietly shaping the business behind sport: the ones deciding which partnerships get signed, which ideas come to life, and which moments millions of fans eventually experience.

Most sports fans will never know their names. They'll never ask them for an autograph. And truthfully, they'd probably be too busy solving the next problem to stop for one anyway. Yet the future of South African sport is being shaped by them every single day.

I've had the privilege of watching that shift unfold firsthand. As someone who now leads an agency in this industry, it's one of the changes that gives me the greatest optimism for where sport is headed.

When I started my career, most of the boardrooms I walked into looked very similar. Today, many of those boardrooms look very different, and I genuinely believe our industry is stronger for it.

At Mscsports, we've experienced that evolution too. Women now make up 60% of our Executive Committee and lead many of our most important client partnerships. Not because they're women, but because they've earned the trust to lead.

Progress isn't simply about counting how many women are in the room. It's about where trust is placed.

Sport has always celebrated the people under the brightest lights, and rightly so. But every unforgettable sporting moment has another team behind it, the team that quietly makes it all possible. Most of them will never feature in the highlights reel. Many of them are women.

This Women's Month, I feel incredibly grateful for the women I have the privilege of working alongside every day: our clients, our partners, our suppliers, and the extraordinary women of Mscsports. I see the judgement calls made under pressure, the negotiations won without ever raising a voice, the partnerships held together through the moments that don't make it into any recap. Not because it's easy, but because they're good at it.

You may never wear the jersey. But you help make the game possible.

Thank you. You inspire me every single day.

Because the scoreboard tells us who won the game. It rarely tells us who made it possible.
