Style ID Africa proves that community is a business strategy at Nedbank IMC 2026

Style ID Africa arrived at Nedbank IMC 2026, Africa's biggest marketing conference, with a question that most brands are still afraid to ask their audiences directly: which community are you? The answer, gathered live from marketing professionals, brand leaders, and creative practitioners across the one-day conference, produced some of the most commercially significant audience data the Style ID Africa team has generated in a single activation.

The Shift Happens community mapping experience did not just drive engagement. It demonstrated, in real time and in front of the industry's most senior decision makers, that community identity is not a marketing insight. It is a business infrastructure.

Style ID Africa proves that community is a business strategy at Nedbank IMC 2026

The activation was anchored by the Community Mapping Wall, a five-panel installation presenting five distinct communities defined not by demographic bracket or purchasing behaviour but by values, traits, and cultural identity. Fitness for the driven and the disciplined, style for the expressive and the trendsetters, beauty for the glow-getters and the self-care devotees. tech for the curious and the early adopters and finally pioneer for the creators and the storytellers.

The experience was deliberately designed around human connection rather than technology. Staff guided delegates through each community and asked directly: which one do you identify with? Delegates answered out loud, played the Find Your Community game, selecting five statements from a shuffled set of fifteen with no community labels visible. The system then compared their self-perception with their actual trait responses, and the gap between the two became the most powerful conversation starter on the floor.

Across the participants, the Fitness Community led at 27%, followed by Pioneer at 22%, Beauty at 21%, Style at 17%, and Tech at 13%. For a room full of marketing professionals, that distribution is itself a finding worth sitting with. It says that even among people whose job is to build audience strategy for a living, community identity does not fragment evenly. It clusters around discipline, health, and physical performance first, and around creation, storytelling, and pioneering next, with beauty, style, and tech following behind. For a brand deciding where to invest content, sponsorship, or product development, that ordering is not trivia. It is a signal of where genuine cultural momentum currently sits within this specific, highly engaged, professionally discerning audience.

For the communities themselves, the value ran in the opposite direction. Every delegate who moved through the wall did not simply receive a label. They received a moment of recognition, a reflection of themselves distinct from how a demographic form or a loyalty programme would ever describe them. That recognition is what produced the numbers that followed it. Beyond the footfall, the activation built a live, opt-in community over two days, with every participant understanding exactly which segment they had joined and why.

A live results screen updated community totals in real time throughout the conference, a podcast corner recorded delegate reactions for the Business of Influence, and a winners wall reinforced the social proof of community participation. Together these elements created an activation that evolved across the conference rather than peaking once and going static, proving in real time that when people are invited to belong rather than simply targeted to convert, they do not just participate. They opt in, they stay, and they bring the next person to the wall.

The Business of Influence podcast recorded live interviews with some of the most senior marketing voices at IMC 2026, including Thato Lekgetha from Volkswagen, Greg Maloka from Kaya FM and Tarryn Knight from Ford South Africa among others. The conversations explored how community intelligence is reshaping brand strategy, content direction, and the future of audience relationships on the continent.

The activation landed in the context of a conference that challenged the industry's relationship with purpose and pressure simultaneously. The session generating the most conversation was a keynote by Conn Bertish, founder of The Creative Resiliency Group, titled 'Happy Purposeful Businesses Are Harder to Kill'. His argument was direct: "You can't stop a purposeful team. Everything, clients, tech, teams, platforms, agencies, can change, but if you've got that purpose it provides solidity and a way to move forward."

Reabaka Moeletsi, senior strategist at Style ID Africa, reflected on what the session meant for modern marketing practice. "The session challenged a familiar instinct within the industry: our constant pursuit of the next big idea can sometimes cause us to overlook the value of creating for the present. Businesses must remain grounded in their brand ethics, values and goals, while building ecosystems that are collaborative, people-driven and purposeful for the audiences, consumers and communities they serve."

Mandisa Norushu added simply: "Conn Bertish's keynote reminded me why purpose beats pressure every time."

Lindo Mkhize, senior new business developer at Style ID Africa, summarised what the activation ultimately confirmed. The most significant finding was not which community was largest, but how quickly and confidently delegates identified where they belonged. Audiences do not want to be found. They want to be recognised.

The Shift Happens community mapping data is available as a strategic report for brands seeking to apply this methodology to their own audience strategy, content direction, and brand positioning. Style ID Africa is accepting partnership enquiries for 2027.
