Now who's seeing red?

So Friday, 1 April 2011, has come and gone, with its fair share of jokes for April Fool's Day (hope you enjoyed ours!) and for Vodacom's rebranding to the Vodafone red and CI (Hillbrow is back to being a red light district, thanks to Ponte... Vodacom is becoming 'simpler, better, faster'... Don't Vodacom customers see red all the time?). So how will Vodacom do compared to Cell C's rebranding and service improvement last year? Only time will show us what the rest of the iceberg looks like.

By the way, which is worse: a Cell C talking ad or Mo the Meerkat? Yes, that [censored] meerkat is back, albeit for a "brief cameo", we've been promised.

In other news, the fight for media freedom here in South Africa certainly did not need last week's The Star/Malema war of words. What a convoluted, embarrassing debacle, even if it makes for great satirical news (yes, Hayibo is back, with sponsorship for one year, while ZAnews is trying the crowdfunding approach). Then there's SANEF on the warpath, asking Jimmy Manyi to show proof of editors censoring government information.

Eyewitness News's award-winning journalist Mandy Wiener has released her book, Killing Kebble, and is currently all over the media, too, but in a good way.

And then there's the new Consumer Protection Act...

Let's keep our cool, people

The truth about socialising the enterprise
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As more and more brands move to the social media sphere through a number of phases, which include listening, experimentation, operational and fully integrated, the spotlight falls on the challenges marketers face in this 'new' and unpredictable environment, where confusion reigns as to who is really in control of the 'proceedings'. Is a legal loophole opening for comparative advertising?
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] The new Consumer Protection Act seems to be in direct conflict with South Africa's ban on comparative advertising. According to the act, the consumer has a right to information about products and services, namely, "consumers must be provided with the facts needed to make informed choices." And there is only one way that any consumer can make an informed choice and that is comparative advertising. Read more >>

Ethical online marketing: how to evaluate the emperor's new clothes
[Andrea Mitchell] From phishing emails to social networking hackers, online scams are as limitless and ever-expanding as the Internet itself. Less amusing is appointing an online marketing company and feeling that you may as well have given your details to that suspicious emailer from your bank. The new frontier of online marketing has, for most, emerged overnight and with it, a rich vein of new companies to mine in a fast-growing market. Read more >>

Transparency, effective communication in information age
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Whether it is in the townships or in the slums, those who occupy the positions of governance - government or private sector - must show transparency and be able to communicate effectively in this new public information space, especially in times of crisis, BBC's Nik Gowing said last week, speaking at a Deloitte presentation and discussion held in Sandton, Johannesburg.
