Ke nako! It really is time!

As you can see on the site, we've doodled the Bizcommunity.com logo to fly the flag for South Africa in honour of the 2010 FIFA World Cup - I can't believe just how mal* things are at the moment, with kick-off finally happening end of this week! The Cape Town office has official gone soccer-mad (see our gallery) and I've been flying the flag, mirror-socked my car (thanks, MINI!) and doing the Friday soccer-shirt thing, along with thousands of other Joburgers.

I even hit Sandton City yesterday, found Zakumi giving the influx of foreign tourists a baie skeef* look and later watched umpteen numbers of bluelight convoys shrieking up and down Oxford Road, escorting various hotshots to and from the mega shopping centre and their hotels. I even have large tour coaches parked outside the complex where I live, just down from one of said hotels. And the media is just one big soccer frenzy...

Oh, and the Gautrain had a huge launch event on Saturday night and treated its VIP guests to stamps, African Footprint and a ticket to ride, among other things. The first commercial trips start tomorrow morning, at 5.30am, just in time to ferry in visitors for you know what.

Nevertheless, there are other things happening, like TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg hauling home South Africa's very first D&AD Black Pencil for its Trillion Dollar campaign for The Zimbabwean (many thanks to Sue Northam of SA Promo Magazine for her excellent coverage on behalf of Biz), and this week it's the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco and the IABC World Conference in Toronto. Respectively, we have Anice Hassim of immedia blogging and Daniel Munslow of Talk2Us reporting exclusively for us.

Ke nako!
Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz)

*I'm practicing being cool in honour of the 2010 Pendoring campaign theme, which broke on Friday 4 June.

PS Don't even think of plagiarising Bizcommunity.com. I will track you down (hello, heard of Google Alerts and Twitter Search, let alone proper online reputation management tools?) and show you the results of my benchpressing at gym...

Please send all marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com and opinion pieces to contributors@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our online editor's column archive.

World cup: R2bn free advertising bonanza
[Chris Moerdyk] If FIFA media coverage estimates are to be believed, in the next five weeks South Africa will get R2 billion in "free" advertising. Nelson Mandela Bridge branded, Madiba posters unveiled
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As the 2010 FIFA World Cup fever mounts, local authorities have been doing some sort of soul-searching, looking back at what has been a long and challenging journey, led by one man they believe was the architect of South Africa winning the bid: Nelson Mandela. Therefore, the City of Johannesburg, by branding its illustrious bridge with two huge posters in and out, has today, Friday, 4 June 2010, paid tribute to the 'founding father of the nation'. Zakumi, oh Zakumi, wherefore art thou?
[Thamsanqa Malinga] Big up to the street vendors and their fong kong South African flags and car mirror socks at every intersection. I know it's not a bright idea to write an article about marketing and start off with a line that's saluting counterfeit goods vendors. But I think even the producers of the 'fly the flag' campaign owe credit to these entrepreneurs. Read more >>

[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The stakes and expectations are high as South Africa hosts the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Keep digital campaigns on the ball for a big soccer season
[Laurian Clemence] For mega sporting events a decade ago, big traditional advertising players used to dominate - but the joy of this 2010 FIFA World Cup is that it is one of the first where South African advertisers, big and small, are on an equal footing, thanks to the Internet. Here's a case study of three companies with tourism and accommodation offerings. Read more >>

Advertisers should support Bafana Bafana, not diss them
[Bonnie Ramaila] Having left advertising after seven years in the industry, I have become quite critical of the type of adverts I normally see on TV.
