Media awards 2010: we fight for freedom and farce

Media awards 2010: we fight for freedom and farce
[Gill Moodie] 2010 proved to be a year of great drama (and farce) for the media industry in South Africa. Who would have thought that 16 years after the dawn of democracy that journalists would be pulling together to fight for media freedom? But there were also many moments of high comedy, huge stories to wrestle with, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, surprises, interesting moves, winners and losers. Here're my thoughts on who's top of the pops of the media industry this year.

SA's 'flawed' legislation, proposals threaten human rights - MMA
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] South Africa's 'fragile' freedom of expression, free flow of information, and media liberties and independence were further shaken this year by a series of what critics call 'flawed' and 'authoritarian' legislation and proposals. As the world commemorated International Human Rights Day last week, Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) called on Government to uphold the spirit of the Constitution and human rights in any new legislation and statutory bodies established.

The Paid Piper: a cautionary (fairy) tale

The Paid Piper: a cautionary (fairy) tale
[Richard Mulholland] Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was a big company called Hamelin. An evil witch came to the land and cursed the big company: "If you don't create some presentations/animate some adverts/make the corner of your logo curvy (pick applicable), everyone will have to work in dull cubicle farms for the rest of time."

2010 - a year of communication achievements
[Daniel Munslow] It feels like yesterday that we sat down with a crystal ball and tried to predict how the face of communication would change throughout the course of 2010. Now, it's already time to reflect and take stock of the year that has been. A busy year; a tough year; an exciting year; an unpredictable year! Of the 10 trends discussed in January 2010, the first eight were action items. Have these trends from January come true?

[Odette van der Haar] We all expected 2010 to be a difficult year following the global economic recession, but the local advertising and communications industry faced some unexpected challenges which had little to do with economics and everything to do with a rapidly changing social, political and legal environment.

Global magazine industry in decline, FIPP report shows
[Herman Manson] Magazine publishers face increasingly tough times as the category struggles to reverse declines in its share of global ad revenue, brought upon by the double whammy that was the Great Recession and a continuous shift in spend towards digital media. Their piece of the global ad pie is expected to continue declining over the next three years, according to FIPP's World Magazine Trends 2010/2011, and will make for grim reading for magazine publishers.

Learn from Wikileaks, Right2Know tells SA government
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The South African government has been told to learn lessons from the Wikileaks saga and stop messing around with the game of secrecy, as it could have terrible consequences if it backfires. "The leaking of secret diplomatic correspondence by Wikileaks serves as a warning to all who wish to hide information from the public," Right2Know campaign national coordinator Mark Weinberg said in a statement yesterday, Thursday, 9 December 2010.

Comfort and affordability with Premier Hotel Cape Manor
[Ruth Cooper] Location, location, location; the Premier Hotel Cape Manor has it in spades. It's situated in Marais Street alongside the pretty Sea Point promenade and, if one was a coked-up rocker and had the urge to throw a TV out of the window, it would probably hit beach sand. (Only a slight exaggeration.)
