Roleplayers in sugar industry reach wage agreement, avoid strike action
The Sugar Industry Bargaining Council has reached a wage agreement increase of 7.5% across the board following a three-month dispute. Wage talks had deadlocked on 31 May 2017 after the employers in the sector made a final offer of 6.5%, which resulted in UASA declaring a dispute at the CCMA.
After initially yielding no success, mediated talks between the CCMA, UASA, and the Sugar Industry Bargaining Council finally resulted in a settlement agreement of 7.5% across the board with effect from 1 April 2017.
