Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008

Gavin Petersen, left, from the Volksblad and Bethuel Mangena, second from right, of Sunday World were the joint winners in the cartoonist category of the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008 Competition held in Sandton. Handing out the awards were Sefako Nyako and Vodacom’s Chief Communications Officer Dot Field.

For his story on Hosken Consolidated Investments, Rob Rose of the Financial Mail, right, won the Financial / Economic category in the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008 Competition held in Sandton. His award was handed to him by judge Robin Sewlal and Geoff Rothschild of the JSE.

Sandile Ndlovu of Sunday Tribune, centre, won the Photography category in the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008 Competition held in Sandton. His award was handed to him by judge Victor Matom and Vodacom’s Chief Communications Officer Dot Field.

The Online Team at the Dispatch comprising of Andrew Trench, Jan Hennop, Tegan Bedser, Rudi Louw and Shadley Haupt won the Online category in the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008 Competition held in Sandton. Accepting the award is Tegan Bedser, centre, and the award is handed to her by judge Rich Mkhondo and Deon Liebenberg (Regional Director Sub-Sahara Africa for Research In Motion, makers of the Blackberry solution).

During the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008 Competition held in Sandton, Tim du Plessis, Nieman Fellow 1993, received a cheque from Vodacom’s Chief Communications Officer Dot Field, on behalf of Vodacom towards the Nieman Foundation in the amount of R100 000.

Shafiq Morton won the community media category in the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008 Competition held in Sandton for his story “Are we really becoming more ‘radical’? ” which appeared in the Muslim Views.

Simnikiwe Xabanisa of the Sunday Times was the winner in the sports category in the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2008 competition held in Sandton.
