World newspaper congress for Cape Town

With the World Association of Newspapers' (WAN) 2006 congress taking place this week in Moscow, the countdown for WAN 2007, the 60th congress, which will be held in Cape Town, has begun. The Newspaper Association of South Africa (NASA) will host the event 2 - 6 June 2007.

NASA has confirmed arrangements for a number of exciting events around this prestigious event for South Africa at which high-profile newspaper owners, publishers and editors from more than 100 countries, will converge on the Cape Town Convention Centre.

NASA President Connie Molusi will formally invite international delegates to WAN 2007 when he addresses the 2006 congress in Moscow on Wednesday, June 7, 2006. A six-minute promotional DVD that highlights South Africa's outstanding potential as a tourist and business destination will follow.

Some of the highlights of the congress next year are:

  • A welcome cocktail function for delegates will be held at the historic Castle in Cape Town on 3 June 2007.
  • More than 900 Cape Town hotel rooms have been booked for delegates to attend the congress, which will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
  • The traditional home of the South African State President, the Groote Schuur Estate, has been booked for a dinner for the board of WAN on 2 June 2007.
  • The world-famous Nederburg Wine Estate will be the venue for a gala dinner on 6 June 2007.
  • Visitors will be given a taste of African cuisine and culture at a dinner and entertainment evening at Moyo's restaurant in Stellenbosch.

This is the first time this prestigious congress will be held in Africa, and negotiations have begun to book an array of top Government, civil society and business speakers from the Continent and internationally, who will focus on issues that include challenges to Press freedom, the impact of electronic media on newspaper sales and new technologies that will shape the newspaper of the future.

There are still a number of sponsorship opportunities for companies that are interested in supporting the congress and gaining exposure to this influential gathering of media owners, editors and publishers. Contact Charmaine Weitsz at +27 11 721 3200 to book an appointment.
