TV in the township makes it mark

Just two months after its launch, Township TV is already changing lives in Diepsloot, Gauteng: around 30 000 people from the impoverished township got to watch almost the entire Africa Cup of Nations live on the new permanent “Big Screen TV” in their home City Park.

With free access, people of all ages enjoyed the football in a secure, relaxed atmosphere without incident.

Social responsibility

In partnership with JHB City Parks (JCP) and DStv, Township TV is aiming to become one of the biggest social responsibility projects in the country.

“It humbles me every time I go to the Park in Diepsloot – the people are so appreciative. The kids are loving the educational programmes during the week and the sport on the weekends is a major drawcard,” says Township TV co-founder and Highveld 94.7 presenter Graeme Joffe.

“We hope to take Township TV to all parts of South Africa,” he adds.

Fouch Fouche, marketing and communication executive at JCP, is confident that Township TV will continue to change lives. “Already, it is getting children off the streets in the afternoons and allowing Diepsloot residents to network and enjoy Diepsloot City Park while being educated and entertained. Johannesburg City Parks is delighted to be part of this pioneering initiative which makes use of our green spaces and turns them into a safe place where people can watch and learn.”

“Evidence of working together”

Adine Strashun, key account and commercial sales manager of MultiChoice Africa, says, “Township TV is evidence of local government's commitment to working together with the private sector to improve the lives of previously disadvantaged communities. DStv is proud to be associated with such a project that gives people access to satellite television and quality programming.”

The next Township TV will be launched in Eldorado Park in March 2008.
