South Africa shortlisted for exemplary policies award

Six policies from five countries, one of which is South Africa, have been shortlisted for the 2012 Future Policy Award, an international award recognising effective and exemplary policies. The topic of the award this year is the protection of oceans and coasts.

South Africa is shortlisted for its Integrated Coastal Management Act, 2008. California, Namibia, Palau, and the Philippines are also still in the running. Thirty-one different policies from 22 countries were nominated, ranging from integrated ocean and coastal policies, marine protected area programmes to laws regulating fisheries, trade in marine products, marine litter and land-sea interactions.

The Future Policy Award is granted by the World Future Council, an international policy research organisation that provides decision makers with effective policy solutions. The winning policy will be announced at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in September 2012. Winners will be celebrated at the 11th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Hyderabad, India, in October. For this year's theme the World Future Council is partnering the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with support from the Okeanos Foundation.

More information on the award process can be found online at the World Future Council's website www.worldfuturecouncil.org and on the blog of the Future Policy Award team www.futurepolicyaward.org
