Accreditation crisis may bite SA's fishing industry
According to a Business Day report, the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing says that it has been given a year's grace by the international Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to get the necessary accreditation processes in place.
Fish SA - an umbrella body representing trawler fisheries - says otherwise, stating that the accreditation will expire on 9 July. It's reported in Business Day that South Africa's fishing industry faces enormous losses if the MSC accreditation is withdrawn, because fishing companies will be prevented from exporting hake to the European markets.
