Oktoberfest in Benoni
Benoni will get a taste of the traditional German folk festival, Oktoberfest, on 17 September. Attendees may expect German beer, food and music as well as performances by various local bands.
Oktoberfest SA is owned and managed by a German couple, living in Benoni, who want to bring a taste of Germany back to their new home, South Africa. Their aim is to create a top-notch Festival in the East Rand for people of all ages.
German beer and food
Imported German Beers will be sold on the day, as well as German Shooters Schnapps, Jagermeister and more. Of course, the usual SAB & Craft Beers will be on sale on the day, as well as spirits and shooters. From a food point of view, many German favourites will be available from Bratwurst to Weisswurst and Sauerkraut.
Entertainment
The Eisbeins will be the official German Oompah Band for the day, playing two sets – two in the afternoon for lunch and one early evening for dinner. The rest of the day’s lineup will be made up of SA bands, including The Black Cat Bones, Georgetown, Gangsterdam, The Sextons, Strait-Jackal, Flipside Rock Band and The Mitten Fits. There will also be a designated Kiddies Play Area with lots to keep the young ones entertained.
Origin of Oktoberfest
The first Oktoberfest was held in the year 1810 in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities began on 12 October, 1810 and ended on 17 October with a horse race. In the following years, the celebrations were repeated and, later, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September.
This year, Oktoberfest in Germany kicks off on 17 September, so the festival and partners, Rockford Media, thought they’d host Benoni’s Oktoberfest at the same time.
The venue
The venue is at Plot No. 8, corner of Lionel St and Springs Road situated just outside Rynfield and Crystal Park in Benoni. It is on a main road and easily accessible and visible. We will have secure parking on the day with plenty security around to protect both vehicles, as well as festival-goers inside.
The festival is 15min from Benoni CBD, and short distances from the N12 highway as well as the R21 if you're coming from Pretoria.
