Deadline looms for Marketing Excellence Awards

There's only a week or so left to get your entries in for the Sunday Times Business Times Marketing Excellence Awards that close on 23 August. Scheduled for Sunday 21 October, the awards recognise and reward the marketing discipline in the South African boardroom in its many facets – including meeting marketing objectives related to image, innovation, creativity, pricing and distribution - the complete ambit of the marketing mix.

Marketing practitioners from all industry sectors are invited to nominate candidates that have shone in the areas of industry, business and individual accomplishment. The four major categories to be judged this year include: Marketing Person of the Year, Marketing Company of the Year, Brand Campaign of the Year and Sponsorship Campaign of the Year.

International judge

Overseen by a 63 member executive level business council chaired by Dr Ivan May, it includes Sir Paul Judge, a leading marketing expert in the United Kingdom. There are three subcommittees overseeing the adjudication process.
An important departure from the first Awards in 2006 is the separation of the Direct Marketing component into its own independent direct marketing annual event and awards supporting the principle that the Sunday Times Business Times Marketing Excellence Awards is an award for marketers and not a supplier-to-marketer's award.

Platinum sponsors for the 2007 Awards include ABSA and Vodacom with the Awards endorsed by the Services Seta, the JSE and the newly formed Marketing Association of South Africa. The entire adjudication process will be audited by Deloitte & Touche to ensure the highest levels of integrity and transparency.

In 2006, 135 entries were received from across the broad spectrum of marketing in South Africa. Marketing Excellence Awards were awarded to Levi Strauss's Michael Joubert for Marketing Person of the Year and Standard Bank for Marketing Organisation of the year. ABSA, MTN and Vodacom were recognised for their excellence in Sponsorships and Brand Campaigns respectively.
