“We have the honour and the privilege to produce the curtain-raiser of such a big event and we are looking forward with confidence and excitement,” executive creative producer Lebo Morake, also known as Lebo M, of the famous Lion King Show, told a jam-packed contingent of local and international journalists.

The show will be broadcast live as part of the opening and final games, and Morake promised to put up a world-class African spectacle, representing all elements of African culture.

“We have done an extensive research globally with this kind of event and I share the huge responsibility of delivering a uniquely African spectacle during the open and closing ceremonies, which will be driven by all cultural elements of who we are as an African nation.”

The VWV Consortium is comprised of VWV Group and Till Dawn Entertainment, alongside associate producers Jack Morton Worldwide.

"Dream project"

“This is our dream project and we are taking it very seriously and working hard day and night to make it a huge success,” VWV CEO Abey Mokgwatsane said.

Meanwhile, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has reported that a total of 351 121 tickets out of the 640 000 allocated for the Confederations Cup have already been sold, bringing hope that with the launch of ‘over the counter' tickets sales process early this month, stadiums will be full to capacity.

LOC CEO Danny Jordaan said, “We approach the tournament with confidence. Our stadiums are ready, our transport and security plans have been fine-tuned and more than 4000 volunteers have been trained in preparation for the first major FIFA tournament on African soil.

“We know we still have much to do, but I can assure you we will not disappoint.”

LOC announced that the Match 11 featuring Brazil and Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria is sold out, adding that approximately 95% of the tickets have been purchased by South Africans.

Soccer fans willing to buy tickets ‘over the counter' are advised to go to the following points:

  • Sandton Isle, corner of Rivonia Road and Linden Street, Johannesburg.
  • Lochlogan Waterfront Mall, corner of Charles Street and 1st Avenue, Bloemfontein.
  • Waterfall Mall, 1 Augrabies Avenue, Rustenburg, North-West.•
