In her first major interview with a women's magazine since her publicised miscarriage in December 2007, Kumalo opens up about her personal life and talks about important life lessons she has learnt.
Editor Tracy Melass says that after 13 issues, with the bimonthly magazine having firmly established itself in the women's magazine market, the time was right to take this step. “We are thrilled with our first local cover girl. Basetsana is bright, accomplished, reflective and intelligent. She is truly one of our national treasures and is more than worthy to take up this honour.”
In the six-page On the couch interview, Bassie talks about surviving loss, her life in the spotlight, and creating a happy relationship.
Melass points out that while a local cover is a first for the magazine's South African edition, this is not an overall strategic change for the magazine. “We will continue to run in-depth, thought-provoking interviews with women of substance, whether they be local or international,” she says. “The most important thing is that their stories and experiences resonate with our readers.”
Says Kumalo in her interview with Melass: “I see myself as a global citizen, then a citizen of this amazing country, then a woman, a mother, and, of course, a black woman, who has been impacted and affected by the past. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I've worked hard to be able to make something of myself. But I have a responsibility to ensure I inspire and empower other women in how I live my life.”
