Vat jou Wegbreek en trek, Ferreira

Wegbreek, the new title from the Ramsay, Son & Parker stable, has finally arrived in town. The magazine, a sister title to Getaway and RS&P's first venture into the Afrikaans market, harnesses the expertise garnered by its award-winning English counterpart with the experience of editor Gerrit Rautenbach and his team.

The new arrival reflects the excellence of its big sister, but is written in a vibrant, idiomatic Afrikaans that allows moedertaal-speakers to savour the read in their preferred language.

While Wegbreek reflects the same destinations, journeys, adventure activities and good-value travel opportunities that Getaway is known for, it has several distinctive characteristics.

Well-known singer and raconteur Koos Kombuis has signed on a columnist and will contribute the last word each month. His 'Oos Wes, Koos Bes' column will provide readers with a regular diet of quirky humour, while the magazine's letters, news, book and music columns will add a distinctive feel of their own.

The maxi 300mm x 230mm format gives Wegbreek the space to display its photography, design and editorial to best advantage, while providing the magazine with a conspicuous presence on the shelves.

The new Afrikaans travel offering is being promoted widely on regional radio stations; through interactive displays at shopping centres in the major cities; and in bookstores and retail outlets around the country for R19.95.

Apart from the pleasure of reading their favourite travel magazine in Afrikaans, competitions in the launch issue give readers the chance to win a Harley-Davidson V-Rod worth R174 000 and a R30 000 game viewing safari in Luangwa, Zambia.

New look for Getaway

Meanwhile, Getaway has undergone its most notable transformation in 17 years.

"We've created a contemporary look that will appeal to younger readers while at the same time retaining enough of the old design to allow older readers to recognise their familiar magazine," comments Rob House, Getaway's new art director and the man tasked with creating its new look.

Standing tall in its new 300mm x 230mm maxi format, the magazine also has a redesigned cover and masthead.

Inside, the contents have received fresh treatment to deliver an energised, vibey feel to the features, while the larger format allows the prize-winning photography, one of Getaway's strongest features, to be shown to full advantage.

A re-launch campaign is introducing the transformed Getaway to readers, with displays in major shopping malls, as well as in bookstores and other retail outlets around the country.
