Designing sounds for William Kentridge
Adam Howard will be joining William Kentridge on stage for the South African premier of the artist's multi-media stage opera, Refuse the Hour, during a series of performances and lectures at the 2015 Design Indaba Festival, taking place in Cape Town this week.
The 80-minute opus features a live narrative by Kentridge accompanied by an original score composed by Philip Miller co-arranged and conducted by Adam Howard.
"After seven tours already in Europe, we're proud to be showcasing Refuse the Hour locally at this year's Design Indaba," says Adam.
Described as an "avant-garde chamber opera" Refuse the Hour transports the audience to a realm where the lines between art and science are torn down and re-envisioned through a combination of dance, music, imagery and mammoth steampunk-esque mechanical devices.
As Refuse the Hour's musical director, Adam forms part of a troop of 12 international and local performers handpicked by Kentridge to bring his vision life.
Adam will also be joining Kentridge as musical director for his keynote lecture at the Design Indaba Conference, offering an unprecedented look into the mind one of South Africa's most prominent artists.
"You can't help but be inspired by William. Our work together has helped me push the boundaries of my own creative process too."
At the same time Adam is also preparing for the relaunch of his brand, Howard Music, in his new Bryanston 3-studio facility.
"There's a lot of interesting stuff happening at the moment, and I can't wait to share our new vision with the industry."
