Respect for human dignity

President Zuma's portrait - you know the one we're talking about - has kept Gail Schimmel awake. The issue, she says, is that the moment we decide that there is a certain category of person that deserves no dignity, we are on a slippery slope.

The Sunday Times editor, Ray Hartley, is a man who wants answers - don't we all... It was claimed in court that the newspaper's journalists had accepted bribes in order to write slanted articles and Hartley - and the rest of us - would like to see the evidence.

When it comes to one-to-one cross-media marketing campaigns, Chene Cundill has some pointers - and a question: "Some people make things happen, some people watch things happen, and some people wonder what happened. Which one are you?"

South Africa has a rich music heritage and song has been a powerful weapon in driving social change, so it's not surprising that Tebogo Koena in a second of two opinion pieces, asks why are we not branding our local music?

Finally, Virginia Hollis is leaving The MediaShop to go freelance - but her first client is... The MediaShop, and she will continue to work with the team for the next few months.

Rod Baker, Content Director

Zuma and the right to dignity
[Gail Schimmel] Zuma's genitals kept me awake last night. Now there is a sentence that I never thought I would say. But I find myself struggling with this issue. Usually, my personal morality falls pretty much in sync with mainstream liberal opinions. And yet I find myself uncomfortable with the idea that, in the case of an artwork exposing Zuma's genitals, freedom of artistic expression triumphs over respect for human dignity. Read more >>

The death of the retainer

Why are we not branding our local music? Part II
[Tebogo Koena] We seem to forget or perhaps don't want history to tap us on the shoulder now and then. When South Africa was in isolation, our people rose up against apartheid through music and chants, original music and chants; it is how we as South Africans give voice to our concerns and deliver a message.
