The festival follows Cape Town's recognition as the world's best city for food in the 2024 Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards, positioning the event as a showcase of the city's growing influence on the international food and tourism landscape.
Rather than simply celebrating the accolade, organisers say “Taste the Crown” will invite locals and international visitors to experience the food, talent and creativity behind Cape Town's reputation.
20 culinary stars take the stage
The festival will bring together 20 acclaimed chefs and food vendors, creating what organisers describe as a culinary “royal court” of local talent.
Visitors will be able to sample signature dishes and innovative creations, while interactive tastings, masterclasses and sensory experiences will give food lovers opportunities to engage with leading brands and culinary personalities.
The event will also include picnic areas for visitors looking for a more relaxed experience, alongside a dedicated family section designed to introduce younger visitors to the city's food culture.
"To be named the best food city in the world is a monumental achievement, and we are rising to the occasion," says Steve Steinfeld, festival director.
"With Taste the Crown, we are not just showcasing our food; we are staging a global culinary spectacle."
Steinfeld says the festival aims to demonstrate that Cape Town can host an international-standard food event capable of standing alongside major culinary festivals in global cities such as Paris, New York and Tokyo.
Food tourism opportunity
Beyond the festival itself, Taste of Cape Town is positioning the event as a platform for food tourism, connecting Cape Town's culinary reputation with its broader visitor economy.
The November festival is expected to attract both local food enthusiasts and international visitors, offering a concentrated showcase of the chefs, producers, restaurants and brands contributing to the city's food identity.
For Cape Town's hospitality and tourism sectors, the event provides another opportunity to turn the city's growing international food profile into a tangible visitor experience.
"Taste the Crown" ultimately aims to transform Cape Town's latest global accolade into an invitation: come to the Mother City and experience why the world is talking about its food.
