Checkers to roll out smart trolleys in Gauteng with new Centurion store

The Shoprite Group is expanding its retail presence in Centurion with the opening of a new Checkers FX, Uniq Clothing by Checkers and Petshop Science at Eastway Midstream Estate, creating 72 new jobs in the process.

The expansion also brings a new layer of retail technology to the area, with the Checkers Midstream store set to become the first Checkers in Gauteng to introduce the retailer’s Xpress Trolley smart shopping carts in the coming weeks.

The technology follows trials at two Checkers stores in the Western Cape and is designed to streamline the in-store shopping journey by allowing customers to scan products as they shop, monitor their spending and pay directly from the trolley without visiting a traditional checkout.

Bringing more retail categories to Midstream

The new Checkers FX offers a broad grocery and general merchandise proposition, including a Meat Market, Hot & Cold Foods Deli, Bakery and Fresh Fruit and Vegetables department.

The store also includes a Sushi and Smoothie Bar, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a Money Market counter offering financial services.

The store is managed by Bongani Chabalala, who joined the Shoprite Group in 2013 as a perishables general assistant. He subsequently progressed through roles including stock counting clerk and trainee manager before becoming a branch manager in November 2024.

“Our team is looking forward to welcoming shoppers and delivering the customer-first service and world-class shopping experience they have come to expect from Checkers,” says Chabalala, Checkers FX Midstream Branch Manager.

Smart trolleys bring checkout-free shopping to Gauteng

The Xpress Trolley is designed to combine shopping, checkout and digital assistance in a single device.

Customers can scan products as they move through the store, keep track of their running spend and complete payment directly on the trolley. The carts also provide product information, personalised promotions and in-store navigation.

For Checkers, the Gauteng rollout extends the retailer’s experimentation with technology aimed at reducing friction in the physical shopping environment.

Uniq reaches another growing retail market

The opening also expands Checkers’ fashion footprint, with a new Uniq Clothing by Checkers store catering to women, men and children.

The retailer positions Uniq around quality fabrics, contemporary style and accessible pricing, supported by a modern store environment, customer service and quick self-service checkout.

The Midstream opening comes as Uniq continues its national expansion, having recently reached the 50-store milestone.

Petshop Science completes the retail mix at the development, offering pet food, treats, toys and a selection of vet-approved local and international brands.

Together, the three formats broaden the Group’s presence within the Midstream retail environment while creating new employment opportunities in the area.

Checkers FX Midstream is located at the new Shopping on Eastway retail centre on the outskirts of the secure Midstream Estate in Centurion, Gauteng and is open daily from 8am to 8pm.
