Just over three years after launching, Uniq has expanded into eight provinces, adding 13 stores in the past financial year alone.

The rapid rollout reflects the retailer’s push to capture a larger share of the everyday clothing market with a proposition built around contemporary style, quality and accessible pricing.

The milestone comes as retailers increasingly look beyond traditional category boundaries to capture more of consumers’ everyday spending. For Checkers, Uniq adds another layer to its retail offering, while giving the group a dedicated fashion proposition spanning womenswear, menswear and kidswear.

Building a recognisable fashion proposition

Uniq Clothing by Checkers has been developing a distinct aesthetic across its ranges, with an emphasis on current styles designed for everyday wear.

From fabric selection and colour to detailing, silhouettes and styling, the brand is positioning itself around clothing that is both contemporary and practical.

“Reaching our 50th store is an incredibly exciting moment for us,” says Benise Spangenberg, head buyer for Uniq Clothing by Checkers.

“It is a reflection of the incredible response we have received from our customers and their appetite for clothing that combines great fabrics, quality and an elevated sense of style at an accessible price.”

Spangenberg says the brand has maintained this focus as it has expanded its clothing offering across different customer segments.

“That has been our focus from the very beginning as we have continued to grow our womenswear, menswear and kidswear offering, and this milestone gives us even greater confidence in where we are going.”

Convenience built into the store experience

The physical retail proposition is also designed around convenience, with Uniq stores offering a welcoming environment, knowledgeable employees and self-service checkout.

The Sea Point store, at 307 Main Road, extends the brand’s Cape Town footprint and gives shoppers access to its clothing ranges within a retail environment focused on simplicity and convenience.

The store trades from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, and 9am to 4pm on Sundays and public holidays.

With 50 stores now established across eight provinces, Uniq’s expansion signals Checkers’ growing ambition in clothing and its broader strategy of giving consumers more reasons to shop across its retail ecosystem.
