Show your support against Secrecy Bill: wear black for Black Tuesday

The Right2Know Campaign and the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) are calling on all citizens to unite in the fight against the passing of controversial Protection of (State) Information Bill (POIB aka 'Secrecy Bill') in its current format, which is due to be voted on at 2pm in the National Assembly in Parliament tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 November 2011.

Apart from the call to dress in black or wear a black ribbon or an armband - initiated by the National Press Club on the weekend - all citizens are encouraged to protest in person at the six Right2Know pickets that will be happening across the country, as well as to make their voices heard via social media such as Twitter and Facebook.

Citizens are also encouraged to go attend Parliament tomorrow, as any member of the public may attend any plenary sitting of Parliament, by arriving at the Visitors' Centre with his or her ID or driver's licence - seats are given on a first-come, first-served basis. SANEF is also mobilising all editors who are able to be in Parliament to attend, and SANEF chair Mondli Makhanya will be addressing the media outside Parliament before and after the voting

The voting was originally supposed to be on Wednesday this week, hence the campaign moniker "Black Wednesday", a direct reference to the Black Wednesday of 19 October 1977, which saw the apartheid regime ban The World and Weekend World newspapers and Pro Veritate (a Christian publication), alongside 19 black organisations and detain scores of critics. On the weekend, though, the voting was moved back by one day to Tuesday, apparently in an attempt by the ruling party, the ANC, to avoid such connotations, so it has now become Black Tuesday.

However, this has still incensed the ANC, according to various media reports (see News24, Business Day, IOL and Eyewitness News): "The only result this unfortunate comparison and the planned campaign, in which people are urged to dress in black, will achieve is to dilute the real history of Black Wednesday and insult the victims of apartheid's barbaric laws," ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga has been quoted as saying today.

Bizcommunity.com fully supports this campaign and will also be 'dressing' in black tomorrow.

Aluta continua!

Targeting the black guy
[Pierre Cassuto] Comedians may be culprits of perpetuating myths for cheap laughs but we marketers (and advertisers) are no better. We continue to use skin colour as a shortcut to box attributes onto potential audiences. Ask yourselves: when was the last time you saw the description of a target market that did not feature a reference to skin colour? Read more >>

Open letter to SAMRA on 60% fee on contract confirmation
[Jean Green] I have been in the practice of qualitative marketing research for the past 48 years. During all this time, it has been virtually unknown for many companies to pay 60% of the required fee on confirmation of a project. Now that we have a Consumer Protection Act in this country, isn't it about time that we considered taking those who break the terms of a contract to court in order to get recourse? And shouldn't SAMRA be advising and assisting us in this? Read more >>

[Theresa Mallinson] The latest news in the ongoing controversy surrounding the Protection of Information Bill is that MPs will vote on the matter on Tuesday. The National Press Club has dubbed the day "Black Tuesday" and called on South Africans to don black as a form of protest; the Right2Know Campaign is organising multiple simultaneous pickets and public prosecutor Thuli Madonsela has set up a team to investigate concerns around the bill. M&G falls foul of NPA Act; a dark portend of things to come
[Theresa Mallinson] The most recent Mail & Guardian features a greatly redacted version of its lead story about a Scorpions' investigation of Mac Maharaj, after his lawyers alerted the paper to the fact that publication would contravene the NPA Act. It hasn't escaped anyone's notice that what amounts to censorship of the media will become increasingly common, should the Protection of Information Bill be voted into law this week. Read more >>

Will Google Search replace domain names?
[Naseem Javed] The growing notion among big advertising agencies and brand marketers is that, as search engines find answers instantly, there's no real need to enter a domain name in the browser and, therefore, domain names are far less important.
