Local documentary wins first prize at Tribeca Film Festival
My Father The Mover, a short documentary film, has won first prize in its category at the recent Tribeca Film Festival.
The documentary is by South African born Julia Jansch, a writer/director/producer who is now based in New York but grew up on the Atlantic Seaboard. It tells the story of 32-year-old single father Mthuthuzeli Stoan Galela, the "Mover".
Mr Galela offers movement and dance classes in Khayelitsha using African electronic "Gqom" dance and has helped many children to rise above the hardship of township life through dance.
The documentary has also been selected to screen at four Oscar-qualifying festivals.
