Michael Rohde, Hyundai SA's director of after sales, said that the programme's purpose was to address the shortage of skills in the motor industry as the average age of technicians was 56 and youngsters were not interested in a motor industry career.
Three years ago, Hyundai SA started speaking to pupils to find out why they were not interested in the industry, Rohde said. This led to the launch of the adopt-a-school programme which brings matriculants to Hyundai SA's training centre and lets them work on the laptops and diagnostic equipment there, as well as allowing interested students to work in the pre-delivery inspection centre during the July school holidays. This, Rohde said, gave participants a feel of the industry, and helped identifying the strongest potential candidates who will be guaranteed a job if they passed their matric exams.
