Get ready to snap up designer used items

Recessionistas can turn themselves into fashionistas without breaking the bank with a new shopping concept that launches in South Africa next month.
Get ready to snap up designer used items

Fashion lovers are invited to clear their cupboards of all the “gently worn” and never-worn designer items, and hand them to Shelly Pitcher, who is the enterprising owner of Bouchic Pre-Loved Sales.

Shoes from Jimmy Choo, accessories from Louis Vuitton, handbags from Prada and jeans from True Religion are waiting for bargain hunters to join the international trend of buying hand-me-ons.

Pitcher, who recently returned to South Africa after working in the UK and Mauritius, said she had collected items from people who had lost their jobs, or who had got divorced and needed extra cash, as well as from those who had returned from overseas.

“I've also had a couple of local celebrities give me a few items to sell on their behalf,” she said.

“The venues will be stylishly laid out with hanging rails and changing rooms.

“Cocktails, foot massages, make-overs and children's entertainment will be available while you shop,” she said.

Pitcher, who is a mother of six children aged four to 19, said she used to hold sales of barely used children's clothing and shoes when she lived in the UK.

The first South African sale, in Cape Town from 7 - 8 November 2009 at FTV Lounge, are only for women, but Pitcher believes her sales in Durban and Johannesburg next year will possibly include men.

Proceeds from the sales of tickets, which are available from Computicket, will go to Operation Bobbi Bear, a charity that assists sexually abused children.
