Pick n Pay CEO Nick Badminton said on Monday the company would meet their suppliers next week to discuss how food prices could be reduced following the dramatic decrease in the petrol price.
Pick n Pay's decision to call a meeting came barely a week after Mthimkhulu held a marathon meeting with food retailers and producers in Durban in an attempt to bring food prices down.
A follow up meeting is scheduled to take place in the next few weeks.
"We welcome the revolutionary move by Pick n Pay to summon all his suppliers to an urgent meeting to discuss petrol-induced food price reduction," Mthimkhulu said.
He viewed the Pick n Pay decision as an indication that the campaign driven by his office to lower food prices in line with lower fuel prices was justified and scientific.
"We also welcome a statement by Shoprite that it will pass over to customers R27 million worth of fuel savings as part of their commitment to the campaign for access to food by the poor majority," said Mthimkhulu.
He challenged other retailers and producers to do what Pick n Pay and Shoprite had done.
