Limpopo project members in Japan for food expo

Members of eight agro-processing projects in Limpopo are in Japan to take part in the annual food and beverage exhibition, Foodex.

The rural projects in Limpopo produce juice, nuts, wines, jams, sauces, condiments, spices, indigenous teas, essential oils, marula juice and mango achar, among other things.

"The aim is to help these projects to get access to new and existing markets in Asia," said Owaiz Khan, a spokesman for Trade and Investment Limpopo (TIL).

TIL is the official agency for the Limpopo provincial government aimed at marketing the potential and investment opportunities of the province to local, national and international business communities.

Khan said agro-processing has been identified as a sector of economic importance in job creation and investment in the province.

The food-processing projects that have been invited to attend the exhibition include Chivirikani Food Processing project, Proma-Gold and Westphalia Farm from Tzaneen, Macadamia Co-operative and Valley Farm Fruits from Vhembe district, Mano-ya-vasadi from Sekhukhune and Nandzika from Giyani.

The projects, six of which are run by women, have created jobs for more than 200 people.

The delegation to Japan is led by MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Collins Chabane.

The annual four-day Foodex Japan, which started on Tuesday, 11 March 2008, is the largest food and beverage exhibition in Asia.

The event, which attracts over 95,000 visitors from 70 countries, is the ideal place for companies to get a foothold in Asia's food and beverage market.
